Visiting Iceland
Iceland's borders have remained open to other EU and Schengen states throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but Iceland continues to implement the travel restrictions imposed for the Schengen Area, which are currently in place.

The pre-registration for visiting Iceland. All passengers are required to fill out a pre-registration form, follow hygiene measures and they are encouraged to download and use the COVID-19 app Rakning C-19. The pre-registration form is not a travel authorization form.

Tracing app Rakning C-19 - information and guidelines.

Border screening
Passengers arriving in Iceland on and after 19 August 2020 may choose either to submit to two screening tests for COVID-19, separated by five days’ quarantine until the results of the second test are known, or else not to undergo border screening but instead to spend 14 days in quarantine after arrival. Children born in or after 2005 are exempt from the screening and quarantine requirements, and the same exemption applies to persons who have been certified by the Icelandic health authorities, following a PCR test, as having previously been infected with COVID-19 and have completed a period of isolation, or if they have been shown by antibody measurements to have recovered from COVID-19.  Transit passsengers who do not leave the terminal facilities at the border are not required to undergo screening or quarantine.

The first screening test is upon arrival, after which the passengers must go into quarantine for 5-6 days according to the Instructions for home-based quarantine or the Instructions for quarantine for visitors in Iceland.

The second screening test takes place at health care services and it is possible to undergo screening all over the country. Please note the different opening hours. Quarantine is released when a negative result is obtained from the second screening test. A positive result always leads to isolation and the Instructions for persons under home-based isolation must be followed. Medical examination, treatment or medical supervision of notifiable diseases, including COVID-19, is of no cost to the patient. This does not apply to an elective PCR-test for the diagnosis of COVID-19.

The fee for border screening remains unchanged at ISK 9,000 if this is paid in advance when pre-registering; if the screening fee is paid at the point of entry, it is ISK 11,000. No charge is taken for the second screening test.

Please read quarantine instructions for visitors in Iceland. The rules of quarantine apply once you leave the border point until you receive the results from the second test. A positive result, will always require isolation.

During quarantine, you:
may seek necessary health care services by contacting the nearest primary care clinic, on-call services (1700 or +354 544 4113) or emergency services (112) by phone.
may take a walk in areas where few other people are present, but must stay at least 2 meter away from any other pedestrians.
must not have direct contact with persons not part of your own household . When in contact with persons in your household you should pay careful attention to hygiene and attempt keep a distance of 2 meter at all times.
must not use public transport but use of taxis, rental cars and private vehicles is permitted.
must not go for a drive, unless when going from point of entry to your final place of quarantine, or when going to the second screening.
may not visit tourist attractions and may not drive long distances, except if necessary between the point of entry/exit at the border and the site of quarantine.
must not visit restaurants, bars, gyms, swimming pools, cinemas, theaters, attend public or private gatherings of any kind or size, or visit any place where crowds are likely.
must not enter grocery stores, pharmacies or other stores . Delivery services are available in some, but not all, towns.
must not attend school or work.
The Icelandic health authorities cannot accept proof of test results. Those with a previously confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 in Iceland are exempt from quarantine upon their return from travel abroad.

A negative test result does not guarantee that an individual will not later be required to self-quarantine if they have been exposed to infection, e.g. on the flight to Iceland. If visitors are unexpectedly quarantined for contact with a case and do not have accommodations arranged to complete 14 days in quarantine, they can be accommodated in official quarantine facilities.

A list of accommodations that receive guests in quarantine is available.

Please note that violations of quarantine or isolation requirements are subject to fines or enforcement action from the relevant authorities to ensure compliance.

All travellers are encouraged to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and others, such as frequent handwashing, use of disinfectants, the two-meter social distancing guidelines, and to respect health safety regulations in place. PCR tests do not absolutely rule out COVID-19 infections.
